How to List Seasonal and Summer Jobs on Your Resume

How to List Seasonal and Summer Jobs on Your Resume How to List Seasonal and Summer Jobs on Your Resume As the holiday season draws to a close, so too will many seasonal jobs. Some say that you shouldnt list seasonal jobs on your resume, but in fact, there are a number of benefits to including these positions. Seasonal positions can be especially important to your resume if you are a student, recent graduate, career changer, or looking to get back into the workforce. Successfully holding a seasonal role indicates that you are adaptable (because you were able to learn quickly how to do a job well), reliable (after all, you cant miss much time when working a seasonal job), and a hard worker (preferring to take a seasonal job over not working).Once you decide whether to include seasonal work, your next task is deciding on the right resume format. Resume advice for seasonal work can typically be applied to internships, temporary work, or contract roles as well.Seasonal considerationsOne of the most important things to do is to make sure to include seasonal, seasonal position, or something similar in parentheses after your job title to indicate that the position had an end date established from the start. Otherwise, a short-term role can reflect negatively on you and make you look like a job hopper, particularly if you have several short stints on your resume. Noting that your role was intended as short-term one will help you avoid those assumptions.Multiple seasonal rolesHolding a series of seasonal or other short-term roles doesnt have to cast you in a negative light or make you seem like a job hopper. There are numerous industries, for example, where contract work is the norm. And some fields, such as accounting, have well-established busy seasons. Because of this, some professionals can choose to work for only a few months per year in temporary, contract, or seasonal roles. If youve had mora than one seasonal role, there are different ways you can go about includ ing them on your resume. While a resume objective is outdated (employers care about their own objectives, not those of job seekers), a professional summary can come in handy. In this section, you can tie your seasonal and permanent work histories together, addressing your skills and experiences. This also gives you the opportunity to use some carefully chosen resume keywords. If youre using a functional or combination resume format (instead of chronological, which is the most common resume format), its up to you whether you list your seasonal work with the rest of your work history, or give it a section of its own. If you do decide to put your seasonal work in a separate section, be sure to give it a very clear section header. Some applicant tracking systems cant recognize section headers that arent standard. As you advance in your career, and your resume is pushing recommended length limits, you might later decide to stop listing your prior seasonal work. Omitting a seasonal role woul d typically leave only a short gap in your history, and employers will always be more concerned about recent gaps than ones that happened five or 10 years ago. Another reason to choose to leave off a seasonal role you held is that it may no longer pertain to your field, or your desired field.Ultimately, listing seasonal work can be to your advantage in a number of situations. Dont forget that seasonal roles can lead to full-time opportunities, and provide you with a broader skill set, a deeper network, and an additional reference. If you include seasonal work on your resume, make sure to use a resume format that highlights it to suit your situation.HAVE TWO MINUTES?Learn how Jobscan can optimize your resume for the tech used by most hiring managers. How to Scan a Resume with Jobscan (208)Explore the Resume Match Report (223)???Full text tutorialGet your own report

Corporate Employee Benefits Communications Plan

Corporate Employee Benefits Communications PlanCorporate Employee Benefits Communications PlanAccording to studies by ADP, a leading provider of human resources management and payroll services, 80 percent of human resource decision makersthinkits important for employees to understand their full benefit options. Unfortunately, they estimate that only around 60 percent of their employees do so. This indicates a breakdown between the expectations of HR leaders and the reality that many employees dont understand the value of their employer-sponsored benefits. Do your employees know what benefits your company provides? Do you communicate this to existing employees or is it something they only see during recruitment and onboarding? Do you have a benefits communication plan to keep them updated so they arent lured away by competitors? Changing a Variety of Employee Benefits Employers spend a great deal of time and money making koranvers that their employees have the very best possible b enefits. Its all a part of making sure employees are happy and healthy in order to be productive at work. Based on the fruchtwein recent research, organizations in the USA spend around $0.43 for every dollar of payroll just for employee benefits, including health, dental, vision, and prescription insurance, life insurance, retirement funds, stock options, paid time off, and employee assistance programs. These figures do not even take into consideration the many other perks and benefits that companies invest in to make the workplace better, like flexible scheduling, corporate discount programs, and casual work attire. And the benefits just keep on increasing. In a special 20-year edition of its annual Employee Benefits research report, released in 2016, the Society for Human Resources Management released its 2016 Employee Benefits researchreport, noted that, as compared to the 1990s, employers are providing a much richer benefits package to employees than ever before- as a result of trying to increase retention rates and improve recruitment efforts in a competitive market. Communicating Employee Benefits The problem is, companies are not doing enough to communicate the value of their programs so that employees are aware of them, or understand their options. Too many firms often limit their communication efforts to specific times, like during recruitment, onboarding, or open enrollment periods. The good news is that in todays technology-driven world, there are multiple ways to communicate employee benefits with your workforce. It is important to note that each employer will want to evaluate how employees prefer to be informed and then develop plans to tap into these resources when creating communications. Read on to learn some of the different ways that employers share benefit-plan information with employees. Printed Materials From single printed pages to full-scale marketing campaigns, many companies turn to written and printed documentation to share em ployee group benefits information. This can be very effective because information can quickly be disseminated to all employees at any time of the year. Marketing communications can also be beefed-up during peak times, such as open enrollment and employee onboarding processing. Additionally, written and printed documentation of benefits information can be edited as benefit plans change. It is important to note that all written documentation should include access to a detailed explanation of benefits as supplied by plan administrators. Create a set of printed benefits documents for employees that include rate schedules and coverage amounts, and a separate set of documents that are designed to provide basic benefit information to candidates before they are recruited for employment. If your workplace is multi-cultural, you may also want to create a set of documents that are translated into other languages for ease in communicating benefits to all employees. Information Meetings Whet her handled informally or via formal sessions facilitated by your benefit plan administrators, benefit meetings can be an effective way of getting plan information and questions answered quickly. Make it a policy that all new hires get a chance to talk with a benefit plan administrator before selecting any benefits for the coming year. Your on-site benefit administrator can also be available to schedule meetings with employees if they have specific questions about how to use their benefits. This can be especially important if there are claims issues. During open enrollment, make sure that your plan administrative team is also available to conduct talks to highlight important updates to the benefit plan and encourage more employees to participate in the group offerings. Digital Communication Methods We now live in a world where digital communication has become the norm. Digital communication includes emails, text messaging, instant messaging, mobile apps, and more. Consider how y ou can get benefit information out to your employees on a regular basis to remind them of all the perks that they have available to them. For example, during the first part of the year, many of your employees will be thinking about getting fit, losing weight, or developing other healthier habits. Use this time as an opportunity to share information about the company wellness program or how the company is committed to helping employees stop smoking. During the summer months, when outdoor activities increase and kids are out of school, you may want to feature information about staying safe in the sun and familial benefits. A good rule of thumb when using digital communication is to keep messaging brief and to the point. Corporate Benefits Portals and Websites ADPs surveys indicate that nine out of 10 large companies, and seven out of 10 mid-size companies, have a web-based benefit portal for hosting employee benefits information and resources. This is a secure way for employers to share important benefits information and instructions for enrolling in benefit plans. Benefit websites must be encrypted to the highest level possible and designed with a single-sign-on process to protect personal health information and other data, locked behind user credentials. Making the most of a website portal for benefits communication can include Setting up a simple system for accessing the portal online and through mobile devicesAdding valuable content that relates to the benefits and wellness goals of employeesProviding a central contact number where employees can get live helpSharing updates and plan documents that can be downloaded on demandLinking the benefits website to the company intranetEnsuring the website is 508 compliant so that all employees have accessInclude content that is easy to translate into other languagesAdding a glossary of basic benefit terminology and a library of benefit topics Social Network Communications Social networking can also be a very effective way of communicating employee benefits. Many employees find this to be a friendly way of dealing with HR. Each company should have access to their own geschftlicher umgang page or at least create one for the purposes of communicating important updates including information about benefit plans. Select from one of the major social media networks such as Facebook or Twitter to allow for the greatest amount of sharing and content choices. Assign a benefits administrator and a member of the marketing team to work together to create benefits messages that encourage participation in the group plans. Share health and wellness tips, financial responsibility tips, and updates to enrollment periods. Include success stories and pictures of employees meeting their wellness goals. Total Compensation Statements In order to make a bigger impact when communicating benefits, it is advised that your company sends out at least an annual statement of total compensation to all employees. Th is is a document that is organized by salary, benefits, and other perks that the company offers to employees. It is a written document that shows in black and white how much the company is investing in every employee. As evidenced by research, many employees dont realize how much the workplace benefits them so that a total compensation statement can create a meaningful dialogue between you and employees. If you are not sure how to create a total rewards or compensation statement, work with a third-party provider to organize all of your data into one central document. Provide a snail mail copy of the total compensation statement as well as a digital copy that you can email to employees. Additional Best Practices When preparing materials, avoid jargon. In fact, dont assume employees understand even basic benefits terminology. When communicating with your employees, keep things simple and in terms that they can understand. If there are complex concepts that need further explanation , use your web portal to create a glossary of terminology that they can review when needed. It is important to plan as early as possible before peak periods of enrollment in order to increase the chances that employees will comprehend their benefits. Use a variety of mediums because every generation and culture absorbinformation differently. Seek support from your benefit plan administrator when gathering additional materials, including marketing materials and plan summary documents. Be creative and keep employee benefits friendly. You will be more successful in transferring the value of benefits to your employees so they will take advantage of these perks of employment.

Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019

Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019Things you did wrong professionally in 2018 and how to fix them in 2019My social media streams are crowded with tales of professional woe during the year that welches, immediately followed by vows to do everything differently next year.A few intrepid souls offered to share their stories, though most asked to keep things anonymous to protect their careersThe passive/aggressive trapJennifer N. wrote in an email I let my annoyance at a project (super complicated, lengthy, research-heavy, reference-heavy, scope creeped, not right for me with not near enough pay by FAR) come through in my correspondence with my client. I felt put upon and taken advantage of and completely underpaid and I let it show in my tone and word choice. But that welches not HER problem.Jennifer realized only too late that because of the aggravation factor, she was starting to lose perspective.I thought I was reigning it in a bit, but in retrospe ct my distaste was loud and clear. she said. What You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the Workplace

What You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the WorkplaceWhat You Can Do About Age Discrimination in the WorkplaceSixty-two percentof the workforce is 25-49 years old while 32 percent is 50-64 years old and 6 percent is 65 and older. Age discrimination is everywhere. I hear mora examples of age discrimination than I hear about sex discrimination, racial discrimination and every other kind put together, writes human resources guru and Forbes contributor Liz Ryan.Ryans observation about age discrimination is shocking, but is it true? If this is the case, it impacts every person in the workforce, and its imperative to build awareness and create more inclusive environments where job candidates of all ages are truly given equal employment opportunities.A 2015 American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) studycaptured data from nearly 2,500 job seekers ages 45-70 as they tried to find work after they lost their employment over the course of the last five years. More than half the respond ents, 51 percent, implicated age discrimination as impeding their search. Half of respondents were working at the time of the survey, and 48 percent of them were earning less at their new jobs than they were making at the jobs they left. Respondents gave multiple reasons for this some started over professionally and moved to jobs in new industries. Some respondents accepted lower level roles than their previous jobs. Others took positions that offered fewer hours.AARPs sample was taken during a difficult economic time, and it may not be representative of most job seekers experience. Still, its disheartening to imagine making these concessions at a stage in our careers when we will likely have garnered ample expertise and experience. Is this what we have to look forward to as we continue to mature into our professional selves, and how do we alter this sobering picture? A good first step in addressing age discrimination is to start talking about it. Diversity training usually involves recognizing and discussing the biases we harbor. When it comes to professionals in the later stages of their careers, some of the misconceptions that erroneously characterize them suggest that they work more slowly or that they are less capable of grasping evolving technologies in the workplace. If we harbor negative misconceptions about older professionals or about ourselves as we age, its important that we identify them for the erroneous beliefs that they are and dispel them in favor of information that is more accurate and fair. These biases are fixable intellectual impurities, misconceptions that we have to recognize before we can train them away.Recruiters and human resources professionals have often taken a strong hand in conducting diversity work. If you find that your teams are skewing young, or if you feel like there may be resistance to hiring older professionals in your corporate culture, maybe its time to request some professional diversity training for your group. Some times a professionals guidance helps lead necessary, but difficult conversations. There are plenty of zugreifbar diversity training programs that are well-rated, and you can also find individual diversity trainers who will come in and work with your team. Creating an opportunity for managers and staff to talk about diversity helps to reaffirm your company value for pursuing a plurality of perspectives when it comes to building teams. Age diversity sometimes gets cut from this conversation. But you can help change that. Another way to create a more inclusive professional environment is to review hiring practices to ensure they dont unfairly advantage some candidates over others. Standardizing your hiring practice can help for example, a written test may measure candidates abilities in an unbiased and uniform way. This data is a useful component to add to your interview process. Government datapredicts that by 2020, 25 percent of the U.S. workforce will be aged 55 or older. So this is the right time to take an honest look at age discrimination and to create cultures of tolerance where professionals of all ages can find a place. In the short term, this vital work will create more inclusive work environments that, in the future, will stand to benefit all of us.

Why I went back to study at 50

Why I went back to study at 50 Why I went back to study at 50Posted August 27, 2013, by Anne WattersAfter working in clerical and administration roles for fruchtwein of my life, at the age of 50 I decided to retrain. My chosen course welches a Diploma of Child Studies, Childrens Services, offered through TAFE. It welchesnt the easiest decision to make and was further complicated by the fact that my two youngest daughters were about to embark on adventures of their own.One was undertaking an overseas gap year before commencing university in NSW and the other was taking up her university place about 1500km from Hobart, where we were living at the time. With my eldest daughter already in NSW and only my son remaining in Tasmania, I made the decision to relocate back to the NSW town my children had grown up in. It definitely wasnt a quiet year for our family and I began my first day at TAFE in Armidale, on the same day my daughter started university in Bathurst.Looking for somewhere to l ive in Armidale and starting a course at the same time meant that getting back into study after many, many years was challenging, to say the least. When I first started, I felt frustrated by what felt like time wasted in the classroom after working in busy environments for many years. And while the course work was manageable, I had to be mindful of deadlinesFor financial reasons I was unable to continue full-time study and found clerical jobs while continuing to study externally. My teachers and fellow students were very supportive of my decision to make these changes. During this time, I did begin to wonder whether it was madness to give up a better paying clerical job for the notoriously poorly paid life in child care. After working part-time in both arenas I decided child care was what I loved and was worth the sacrifice so I gave up the clerical job and began my full-time career in child care in a preschool room. I cant help but feel satisfied with my decision, as I prepare chil dren to be ready for the next phase of their lives schoolWhat I have also discovered is how undervalued people in my industry are, often being seen to be glorified babysitters. As my centre is long day care, this is particularly the case. Parents are often time poor, with little opportunity to become involved in the events held at the centre.Over the brde 10 years I have been lucky to work with a strong, dedicated and supportive team. This in itself has been a significant factor in the level of enjoyment I have had in my work. I have had the mentoring of two professional and wonderful centre Directors and am very thankful for the additional professional development to which Ive had access over the years. In retrospect, had I known how much I would love this job, I would have made my decision earlier in life. It is so rewarding working with and helping to develop preschool-age children to their full potential, whilst also addressing issues and directing families towards the help they may need.I sometimes think that while my own children were in primary school it would have been a good opportunity to study a Bachelor of Education, Early Childhood. What its like working with the most powerful people in tech

What its like working with the most powerful people in techWhat its like working with the most powerful people in techThe newly released novel Sophia of Silicon Valley chronicles the fictional world of Sophia Young, a recent college graduate navigating the Silicon Valley tech scene in the mid-90s.The book follows Sophia as shes fired from an investment bank, rises through the ranks at a top Silicon Valley law firm, and eventually becomes an investor relations guru - first, to an eccentric, passionate CEO with a penchant for jeans and black t-shirts who was famously fired from his own computer company. Later, Sophia works for a younger, genius founder who wants to build electric cars and rocket ships. If any of that sounds familiar, it should the books author, Anna Yen, worked under Steve Jobs at Pixar and Elon Musk at Tesla. So while Yens book might be fiction, the people and companies portrayed in it are based on real life. Sophia of Silicon Valley is essentially one womans account o f navigating the Valley in its heyday, and working with some of the most powerful people in tech.A perspective very few people have ever seenYen has been working in Silicon Valley for nearly 25 years, and she says Sophia of Silicon Valley is a culmination of zu sich experiences and the lessons shes learned along the way.Apart from timeline changes and tweaks to the characters - Yen says she took bits and pieces of people she worked with over the years - the book is essentially a memoir.Sophia is a toned-down version of me - I have a much worse mouth, Yen told Business Insider. But she is me. That part is very autobiographical. While Yen had considered writing a book for awhile, she said, therbeiewas one particular impetus for getting started Steve Jobs, the 2015 film starring Michael Fassbender.I actually have always had this policy, I dont read anything about him, I dont watch any of the movies - the TV movies or the films that have come out about him, Yen said. I just always fe lt like, I knew the person that I knew and thats all I needed to know. But that Michael Fassbender movie, for some reason I watched it, and I was upset by it because I felt like it was unfair.Yen said she wanted to use to book to present a perspective that very few people have ever seen and will ever get to see - the other side of Jobs, if you will. The Jobs character in the book, Scott Kraft, is demanding, eccentric, and quick to anger. In one memorable scene in the book, he asks Sophia - who had just started working for his animation startup, Treehouse - if shes stupid or fking stupid. But Kraft is also painted as a mentor and a fatherly figure to Sophia. When Sophia mulls leaving Treehouse for Ion, the electric car company, Kraft encourages her to leave in order to take on new challenges. He even presents her with an extravagant parting gift an enormous fish tank occupied by an octopus, which Kraft calls his spirit animal. While Yen declined to give many specifics about how much of Krafts character is inspired by Jobs real-life actions, she said that she wanted to portray the softer side of Jobs.I think he gets a ton of respect as an innovator and as a leader, Yen said. But I dont think he gets any respect for being a good person.A lot of the time when I say, I worked for Steve Jobs or I worked for Elon Musk, the first thing people say, no joke, is Oh, I hear hes a real ahole. I am not kidding They are tough characters, absolutely. Theyre not easy - theyre demanding, she said. But that doesnt mean theyre an ahole.Yen did verify one real-life aspect of Jobs that she incorporated into the Kraft character his nervous habit of constantly tugging up his socks through his pants, which eventually wore through the fabric. He did funny things. I dont know if anyone got it, but he used to pull on his jeans all the time. Holes, in the bottom of his pants Yen said. It was like a stress relief.Passing on lessons to the next generationYen wants people to know her book is not a salacious tell-all. It was intended to entertain and educate, she says, not to take tech billionaires to task over their behavior 20 years ago.I wrote the book based on the major lessons I learned that I always used day-to-day, Yen said. I wanted it to be fun and yet something that young women might be inspired by - and thats all I wanted it to be. I wasnt trying for more.Yen says shes the person that everyone comes to for advice - I dont know why she said. Im a total screw-up - and she wanted to pepper the book with some of the mantras she repeats to herself on a daily basis. The most notable line, six minutes at a time, is a play on how law firms bill their time, which Sophia repeats to herself whenever shes stressed. Yen uses it in real life, too.Life has not always gone my way - Ive gotten fired a ton, Yen said. But life isnt easy in general. These little things that Ive learned that helped me get through life are things that I wanted to teach my nieces and nephews, a nd everyone. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

How to Answer Interview Questions About Your Ideal Boss

How to Answer Interview Questions About Your Ideal BossHow to Answer Interview Questions About Your Ideal BossAs part of theinterview process, employers might want to assess how youll respond to supervision if youre hired. Theyll try to determine whether you have any issues with authority, so your interviewer might ask questions aboutyour preferred teamberaterinin an attempt to figure out how well youll work within the companys management framework. Whether youve had great past experiences with bosses or they were a collective nightmare, answering this question can admittedly be a little like walking a tightrope. It can help to have a firm plan going in for what youll want to say- and not say. What to SayTailor your response to the job youre applying for- for example, your response should lean toward independence when applying for a job where youll be largely expected to work on your own.Take the fence and mention something good about both sides of the equation, working independently vs. with a very hands-on supervisor.Make your answer about you, focusing on your strengths rather than potential problems with management. What Not to SayNever criticize them in these conversations, no matter how awful your previous bosses wereLess is more- and less can go wrong- when you keep your responses short and sweet, so refrain from getting too wordy.Try to focus on just one or two past bosses/employers so you dont come off as a job-hopper. Try to Strike a Balance Youll want to emphasize your ability to work independently as well as your comfort with taking direction from a boss. You dont want to come across as needing too much or too little supervision. Think about the job youre interviewing for before you answer, and try to estimate how much management the employer will expect that youll require. Use this to guide your answer. Emphasize Your Adaptability Share how youve thrived with a variety of supervisory styles in your past. Be prepared to give examples of how y ouve been productive with different types of bosses...but not too many. You dont want to come off like a job-hopper with a mind-boggling, long list of previous jobs. Never Criticize a Past Supervisor Your prospective employer will probably assume that youre a difficult employee if you offer up a list of complaints, no matter how well-earned they might be. You dont want this. Even when an interviewer asks you to describe your least favorite boss, focus on how you were mucksmuschenstill successful in this environment and emphasize what you look for in a manager rather than the qualities you dislike. Dont Get Too Carried Away With Your Answer Keep your answer brief. Dont imply that you have unrealistic expectations for some superhuman manager or that youll be too needy as an employee. The less you say, the less likely it is that youll trip yourself up. By the same token, one-word responses wont do. Try to balance your ability to take direction from a boss with your ability to w ork independently when youre answering these questions. Avoid criticizing any of your former employers. Hiring managers will wonder if youll do the same when its time to discuss their organization. Sample Answers Describe your ideal boss. My ideal boss would encourage clear communication between herself and her employees. I believe that communication- in person, as well as via phone and email- is critical to a successful relationship between an employer and employee. What types of managers have you worked for, and what type do you prefer? Ive worked under employers with a variety of management styles. Ive had some employers who encourage lots of independent work, and others who prefer to give clear, specific instructions. I thrive in both environments. I work very well independently, but also know when to ask questions. Describe your worst boss. I value an employer who communicates clearly with his employees. Im a strong written and oral communicator and I appreciate employers wh o value those skills. In the past, I have had some employers who have been less than clear in conveying their ideas and directions. Although I work very well independently and I dont require excessive supervision, I do appreciate employers who speak clearly to employees. mora Interview Questions About Bosses If you knew your boss was100% wrong about something, how would you handle it?
